Bad Breath (Halitosis): Causes and Solutions

Sağlıklı gülüş ve düzenli ağız bakımı

Bad breath (halitosis) is a fairly common condition that can negatively affect a person’s social life and confidence. It usually stems from causes inside the mouth and can be prevented with proper care; however, in some cases it can also be a sign of an underlying health problem. In this article we take a detailed look at the causes of bad breath, how to recognize it, and ways to prevent and treat it.

What is halitosis?

Halitosis is the medical name for persistent unpleasant odor coming from the mouth. Mild morning breath, due to reduced saliva flow at night, is normal and passes with brushing. However, an odor that lasts all day and does not go away despite brushing is a condition that needs to be addressed.

Causes inside the mouth

The vast majority of bad breath originates inside the mouth. The most common causes are:

  • The bacterial coating on the tongue: Bacteria accumulating especially on the back of the tongue are the main source of odor-producing compounds.
  • Inadequate oral care: Not fully cleaning the teeth and between the teeth leads to food debris and plaque accumulation.
  • Gum diseases: Inflamed gums are an important cause of persistent bad breath.
  • Decay and infections: Advanced cavities and oral infections can produce odor.
  • Dry mouth: Saliva cleans the mouth; when it decreases, bacteria multiply and odor increases.

Causes outside the mouth and systemic causes

Less frequently, bad breath can be related to the digestive system, sinus and nasal problems, tonsil stones, certain systemic diseases or medications used. If the odor persists even though all oral causes have been ruled out, a relevant medical assessment is recommended. Smoking and alcohol are also well-known factors in persistent odor.

Temporary or persistent?

Odor caused by foods such as onion, garlic, spicy foods or coffee is temporary and disappears as these substances leave the body. Persistent bad breath, on the other hand, is usually a sign of a problem related to oral health, and its cause should be identified and eliminated.

How is bad breath detected?

People often find it difficult to notice their own bad breath. Licking the back of your hand and checking the smell, or asking someone you trust, can give an idea; however, the most accurate assessment is made with a dental examination. During the examination, the source of the odor (tongue, gums, decay, etc.) is identified and the correct treatment is planned.

Ways to prevent it

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with the correct technique.
  • Use floss or an interdental brush once a day.
  • Clean your tongue regularly; you can use a tongue cleaner.
  • Prevent dry mouth by drinking plenty of water.
  • Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
  • Have a dental check-up and scaling every six months.

Treatment

The treatment of bad breath is directed at its cause. Scaling, treatment of cavities and gum diseases, and building correct oral care habits eliminate the odor in most cases. Where no oral cause can be found, a referral to the relevant specialist is made. What matters is to identify and eliminate the source rather than masking the odor with temporary solutions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is bad breath more noticeable in the morning?

Because saliva flow decreases at night, bacteria multiply and odor increases. This morning odor is normal and passes with brushing.

Does mouthwash completely solve bad breath?

Mouthwash can temporarily reduce odor but does not eliminate the cause of persistent bad breath. The real solution is to identify and treat the source.

Is tongue cleaning really necessary?

Yes. Bacteria accumulating on the back of the tongue are among the main sources of bad breath; regular tongue cleaning makes a noticeable difference.

My bad breath won’t go away, what should I do?

For odor that does not go away despite brushing and care, see a dentist; the cause is identified and appropriate treatment is planned.
